Sewage overflow prompts water testing

Posted: Updated:

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - A sewage water overflow has prompted clean-up efforts in the Middle Swamp in Florence County, according to officials with the City of Florence.

Water samples have been taken by officials to clear any possibility of swamp contamination after a City of Florence lift station operator arrived at the Middle Swamp on June 5 to find a sanitary sewer overflow.  Officials believe a blown fuse was to blame for a malfunctioning pump control panel that is said to be behind the leak.

The City of Florence estimates that 18,000 gallons of sewage made its way from the pump station to the Middle Swamp, which empties into the Jeffries Creek.

All signs of solid waste in the areas affected have been removed at the overflow site and lime has been used to disinfect the area.

Samples taken from the water will allow officials to see if the overflow poses any threat to the general public or the environment.
