ATLANTA (AP) - DeKalb County schools superintendent Crawford Lewis says he hopes to open a military school in conjunction with the U.S. Marine Corps by August of next year.
Lewis made the announcement during a meeting of the school board Monday night. The meeting drew protesters outside upset over the proposed military school.
School officials had planned to open the school this fall, but Lewis said the Marines haven't yet signed off on the proposal.
Lt. Joy Crabaugh, spokeswoman for the Marines, said the proposal is still being reviewed and must get the approval of Secretary of the Navy Donald C. Winter before it can go forward.
Opponents of the school say it would be a recruiting tool for the military. Lewis and other supporters say the Marine academy would help struggling students to graduate rather than drop out.
