WMBF StormChaser - WMBFNews.com, Myrtle Beach/Florence SC, Weather

This tool completes the WMBF News Fist Alert Weather Team offering real-time information and confirmation of what kind of weather is affecting your area. Severe storms, snow or sun, the WMBF News Storm Chaser is always out and about to relay back important weather data to the First Alert Weather Team.

“We have many tools and plenty of technology but the WMBF News Storm Chaser by far is one of the most important tools we have. Nothing is as important as ground truth, seeing it for yourself and that is what the WMBF News Storm Chaser offers exclusively to our viewers!” - WMBF First Alert Weather Team

Here’s a snazzy piece of equipment we’re so excited to have riding along with the WMBF News Storm Chaser. This little number offers the WMBF News Storm Team with up-to-the-second meteorological conditions anywhere the Storm Chaser goes and beyond. The Scout consists of a Davis Instruments Vantage Pro 2 Wireless Weather Station with a standard radiation shield, measuring rain to relative humidity, temperatures, wind direction and speed to barometric pressure. What makes this setup unique is its mobility. Three 90-pound magnets fasten it firmly to the top of the Storm Chaser, allowing us to take the instrumentation off the vehicle and either use it anywhere else or take it with us to schools to give students hands-on lessons in weather!

StormChaser Webcam
The view you see from the Storm Chaser during weather events and more is by this windshield-mounted webcam. Through wireless internet connections, we can show you at home what is happening around the Grand Strand and Pee Dee. This bit of technology has come in handy on more than one occasion from showing where the dangerous snow-covered streets are located to blinding smoke and strong storms, the WMBF News Storm Chaser brings it to you live.

"Despite the greatest advancements in weather technology, nothing stacks up to 'ground truth' and that is what this webcam technology offers the WMBF News Storm Team and our viewers at home to keep them safe. That is the goal." – WMBF Storm Team

Dashboard Live Radar
Through the power of wireless internet again, the WMBF News Storm Team is able to see what is happening around them with live radar using Gibson-Ridge Level X radar software. This on-board software receives level III radar data from the National Weather Service radar across the Carolinas. When the Storm Team meteorologist are out in the elements, they will always be one step ahead of the storms so they can stay at a safe distance from any severe weather that might be in the area.

"This mobile radar has proven to be a powerful tool, allowing us to compare radar data to storm structures which can lead to more accurate advance warnings for folks in the path of these storms." – WMBF Storm Team

Sparks Toyota
We wouldn’t be anywhere if it wasn’t for the forward thinking of Sparks Toyota. Patrick Sparks thankfully saw the vision of the WMBF News Storm Team and realizes the importance a vehicle such as this to his customers and the viewers of WMBF News. This vehicle has proven time and time again how essential it is to our viewers, and we are grateful to have such a great working relationship with Sparks Toyota. We look forward to continuing our success with them in the future.

"The emergency services continually train for all types of tragic situations. The one factor they have no control over is the weather. That's why it's so important to have qualified professionals such as those with the WMBF News Storm Team to provide them with the latest and most accurate weather information. For the men and women in our Emergency Services and those they have committed to protect it could be a matter of life or death." - Wally Elliott
