Updated September 2nd, 2010 7:45 AM EDT:
Earl has continued to strengthen with 145 mph sustained winds making it a strong category 4 hurricane. Hurricane force winds of greater than 73 mph stretch out 90 miles with tropical storm force winds extended out a little over 200 miles from the center of circulation. As of the 5am update, Earl is expected to stay over 250 miles from the Grand Strand. The storm will make that closest pass by this evening with 110 mph winds as the Earl starts to weaken a bit.
The major threats to our area remain along the coastal waters with 8 to 12 foot waves Thursday and a very high risk of rip currents. Bottom line, the waters are no place to be for the next couple of days as Earl cruises by as an intense hurricane.
Thursday: Sunny inland with more clouds along the coast. Highs in the 90s again.
Friday: Mostly sunny and hot. Highs in the upper 90s.
Saturday: Sunny Skies. Highs in the upper 80s, low 90s.
