MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – South Carolina residents are more likely to be the victims of a home break-in, according to the results of a new study.
The report, published by the team at ASecureLife, ranks S.C. in the top 10 states with the most break-ins per 100,000 residents, coming in at No. 9.
Southern states in general saw the highest rate of home break-ins, according to the study. In addition to S.C., Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama all ranked in the top 10.
Researchers found the higher rate of break-ins in the South could have to do with a lower population density than is found in most of the East Coast states, where break-in rates were lower.
New York had the smallest amount of break-ins across the country.
To compile their rankings, ASecureLife looked at 2017 FBI burglary statistics to figure out which states had the most and the least risk for break-ins per 100,000 residents.
The top 10 states with the most break-ins, according to the study, are:
1. New Mexico
8. North Carolina
9. South Carolina
