Myrtle Beach MMA fighter prepares for Bellator 215

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - For MMA fighters around the world, each one of them dreams of that one chance, that one fight to make a name for themselves.

For Myrtle Beach native Cody Jones, that dream has become a reality.

Jones has been training to fight since October and will get the chance of a life time next Friday fighting on the main card of Bellator 215.

His opponent is Austin Vanderford, who is also making his Bellator debut at the Mohican Sun in Connecticut.

“This isn't a fluke this is my time and I'm ready to go,” said Jones.

Cody graduated from Myrtle Beach High School in 2011 and has a background in karate, wrestling, jujitsu and kickboxing.

From the first time he ever stepped into the octagon, Cody was hooked.

“I like punching and kicking people honestly, so putting this all together and making it one seamless art I’m in love with that,” said Jones.

Cody has spent the past decade dedicated to MMA, waiting for the chance to show off his skills in front of a national audience.

“You have to put 100 percent into it. It’s a full-time job,” said Jones.

While his opponent does have a much larger following on social media, Jones blocks all that out. He knows this fight isn’t about followers on social media, it’s about taking his career to the next level.

“I'm going to go out there and try to upset the world,” said Jones.

Jones has spent between 6 and 8 hours a day training at Fitness Edge MMA in Conway, where his trainers and teammates couldn’t be more proud.

“Even out of the Myrtle Beach area to catapult to the main card of a Bellator event that's huge,” said Michael Kelley.

“It's awesome, we work together and trained together for maybe four or five years and I'm always proud when one of my boys makes it,” said Cliff Davis.

As Jones prepares to enters the cage next Friday, his confidence will shine, knowing his hard work has paid off to get to the next level.

“I've been fighting since I was 15 years old, I have a lot of cage experience and a lot of life experience just being able to fight and scrap and I think that experience is going to help me,” said Jones.

That fight will take place this coming Friday, February 15th on the Paramount Network.

Cody’s family and friends do plan on hosting a watch party to cheer on the hometown hero.
