LUMBERTON, NC (WMBF) – Four people were injured early Wednesday morning after an 18-wheeler truck ran across a drainage pit on Interstate 95 that had workers in it.

Robert Ivey, Lumberton Rescue and EMS commander, said the crash happened around the 26-mile marker on I-95 in the Lumberton area. The truck was heading north when it veered left into the median, road over the guide cables and then traveled over the pit the workers were in.

There were roughly 25 workers in the area at the time of the incident, according to Ivey. Four people were hurt, including the tractor-trailer driver.

Three of the victims were in the pit when the truck ran over it, Ivey said. When EMS arrived, the injured workers were laying next to the truck and were not stuck in any way, he added.

Two of the victims were flown from the scene and taken to New Hanover Trauma Center, according to Ivey. The driver and another worker were taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries.

Prayers for those injured in this mornings incident on I-95 North of Lumberton. Thank you to the agencies who responded:...
