HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Horry County Schools is considering buying 30 acres of land in order to build a new elementary school in the Carolina Forest area.
HCS has the option of buying the land that sits south of Highway 31 and west of Highway 501 on Ronald McNair Boulevard, but they have to decide some time this year on whether they’re going to buy it.
Horry County School Board Chair Ken Richardson couldn’t give a timeline for when that purchase may go through or when the school would be built.
Richardson says the land would cost about $2.5 million to purchase, but that number could be more or less depending on negotiations.
Richardson says he believes the board will move forward with the purchase.
Carolina Forest is one of the areas in the County that continues to grow in student population.
“According to facilities, that’s a growing area, and we need the property,” Richardson said. “I think we found the money for that property, and we don’t want to lose it because we’ve had an option on it, and that option does expire in 2019.”
The board will vote on whether to purchase the land at a future meeting.
