Horry County working to keep up with growing numbers of sex offenders

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Horry County is one of the counties in South Carolina with the greatest number of sex offenders.

Corporal Keely Hucks with the Horry County Sheriff’s Office said Horry County is just behind Greenville and Charleston.

There are currently 570 sex offenders in Horry County, but the number is constantly changing. In May 2017, there were 523 and August 2018 there were 560. Officials with the sheriff’s office said six new sex offenders were added to the local list just last week.

"That number is constantly fluctuating on a weekly and monthly basis,” said Horry County Sheriff’s spokesperson Brooke Holden.

“The more information we can get on it and be aware is the best because parents with their small children living in their neighborhood with someone is a little scary,” said Forestbrook resident Carol Sirois. “I know we had the bus route changed because of it in the neighborhood here.”

There are several ways residents can find out if any registered sex offenders are in their area. The HCSO’s website allows people to sign up to receive email notifications about men and women in their area, according to Holden.

“When sex offenders move into their area and it would be a one-mile radius of the address they signed up for,” Keely said.

Four deputies are now working in the sex offender department, doing regular address checks in the county.
