Coroner identifies victim found in Longs ditch with a gunshot wound

’You can’t just leave him there:’ Man recounts discovering body in ditch in Longs area

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A body found in a Longs ditch Wednesday morning has been identified.

According to Horry County Deputy Coroner Darris Fowler, the victim has been identified as 22-year-old Rockeiem Young, who had been staying in the Tabor City, NC area.

Fowler said the victim died from a gunshot wound and the death is being investigated as a homicide.

A North Carolina man made the grisly discovery on Wednesday, when he found the body in a ditch off of Circle Bay Road in the Longs area on Wednesday morning.

That man, named Janique, found the body while he was on his way to work.

“Just going down the road, not even a tenth of a mile down the road, I saw something on the ground. I thought it was a dead deer. I didn't know what it was. I asked my buddy in the truck and said, ‘Man, did you see that back there in the ditch?’ and he didn't really see it so I pulled the brakes and said, ‘Man, jump out there with me,’ and went back and looked and it sure was a man laying in the ditch dead,” Janique said. The first thing he and his colleagues did was call police. “You can't just leave him there and go to work, so I told him call the police and we sat there and waited for the police to come,” Janique said.
